The Republic of Austria recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 15 January 1992. Diplomatic relations between two states were established on 20 February 1992. On 1 September 1995 the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Vienna began its work. On 22 June 2010 the Embassy of the Republic of Austria in Baku was inaugurated with the participation of the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria Mr. Michael Spindelegger and Federal Minister of Economy, Family and Youth Mr. Reinhold Mitterlehner. 

 

Bilateral visits of the Presidents

The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev paid an official visit to Austria from 12 to 14 May 2013. During the visit President Aliyev met with his counterpart H.E. Mr. Heinz Fischer for bilateral talks. After the meeting the heads of state signed “Declaration on friendly relations and partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria” followed by press conference and luncheon in honor of the President of Azerbaijan and his spouse. Other meetings took place in the Federal Chancellery Office with the Federal Chancellor Mr. Werner Faymann and in the Vienna City Hall with Mayor Mr. Michael Häupl.

The two Presidents also took part in the Austria-Azerbaijan Business Forum organized by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. On 13 May the official opening ceremony of the Azerbaijani Cultural Centre in Vienna was held with participation of President Aliyev and First Lady Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva. The Austrian side was represented by Acting Speaker of Parliament Mr. Fritz Neugebauer.

On 14 May President Aliyev visited the United Nations Office at Vienna and was greeted by and met with Mr. Yury Fedotov, Director General of UNOV and Executive Director of UNODC. President Aliyev held meetings with Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of IAEA, Mr. Lassino Zerbo, Executive Director of CTBTO and Mr. Kandeh Yumkello, Director General of UNIDO.

 President of the Republic of Austria H.E. Mr Heinz Fisher paid an official visit to Azerbaijan from 11 to 12 October 2011. During the visit President Fischer had meetings with his counterpart H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister Mr. Artur Rasi-zada and Speaker of Parliament Mr. Oktay Asadov.

The first official visit of late President H.E. Mr. Heydar Aliyev to Austria took place from 3 to 6 July 2000. During that visit the President met with the President of Austria H.E. Mr. Thomas Klestil and Federal Chancellor H.E. Mr. Wolfgang Schüssel, Foreign Minister Dr. Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Speaker of Parliament Mr. Hainz Fischer and Mayor of Vienna Mr. Michael Häupl.

 

Bilateral visits of the Foreign Ministers

Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Mr. Michael Spindelegger visited Azerbaijan on 22-24 June 2010 (on the occasion of opening of the Embassy) and on 11-12 October 2011 (accompanying President of Austria H.E. Mr. Hainz Fisher in his official visit to Azerbaijan).

In July 2000 the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria Dr. Benita Ferrero-Waldner visited Azerbaijan.

On 9 July 1999 Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria Dr. Wolfgang Schüssel visited Azerbaijan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov visited Austria on 12-14 May 2013 (accompanying President of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev in his official visit to Austria).

On 19-22 August 2010 and 16-18 August 2012 Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov took part in Salzburg Trialogue.

On 6-7 September 2005, on the invitation of the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Mrs. Ursula Plassnik, the working visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov to Vienna took place.
